Webinar: Stand-Alone Geographers: How New Opportunities and Technologies Can Benefit You When You are a Department of One (or Two)
Date and Time: Friday, October 15, 2021 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm U.S. Eastern Time
Stand-alone geographers are faculty members who represent the discipline of geography by themselves (and sometimes with one other colleague) in many colleges and universities. Their role is to provide geography coursework and are usually housed in department of a different discipline (for example, History). Stand-alone geographers are referred to as SAGE’s for the AAG, and many are members of AAG’s SAGE Affinity Group. AAG offers SAGE’s opportunities to meet other SAGE’s as well as other members who share common research agendas. As one can imagine, a sole representative of geography on a college campus needs to discover ways to share and collaborate with other geographers on other campuses.
In recent years, technological advancements have allowed geographers, including SAGE’s, to coordinate with other members via streaming platforms, webinars, and online workshops. Over the past 18 months, COVID-19 led to full online instruction and caused AAG’s annual meetings in Denver (2020) and Seattle (2021) to become entirely virtual events. Even this meeting is a virtual combination of several regional associations.
This panel session offers the opportunity for stand-alone geographers from various regions to have an open discussion on how new opportunities and technologies can help build community and provide support for SAGE’s. Panelists can share how they have already embraced technology and/or learn from others on ways to encompass technology in the future. Notwithstanding, panelists can also share how they dealt with adjustments because of COVID-19. This session also offers an opportunity for new and early career faculty to learn more about being (or becoming) a SAGE.
